Diversity Equity and Inclusion Module Series

This is an in-depth, 45-minute modules, developed and led by distinguished Miami faculty and staff experts, tackle essential topics such as bias, stereotypes, and microaggressions; cultural intelligence; race and anti-racism; ableism; strategies for workplace inclusiveness. It aims to empower people to lead and support diverse, equal and inclusive workplaces and communities. Rooted in Love and Honor, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ faculty and staff provide you with applicable knowledge, research-based case studies, and clear strategies to meet the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century and beyond.

Building an Inclusive Miami: A Facilitated Discussion

In the context of our commitment to an inclusive Miami community, the Office for Institutional Diversity and Inclusion offers “Building an Inclusive Miami,” a two-hour facilitated discussion on inclusive leadership and organizational change for teams across Miami. This interactive facilitated discussion centers the interconnections between individual identities and experiences, and system-wide practices, policies, and change. Through the lenses of organizational change processes, the facilitated discussion provides opportunities to individually and collaboratively identify components of an inclusive organization and apply this knowledge to evaluation of policies and practices in your units and organization more broadly. It also provides an opportunity to identify plans for next steps individually and as a team within the framework of organizational change in the service of an ever more inclusive Miami.

Redhawk Equity Leadership Series (RELS), is a cultural competency certificate. This initiative will help participants to develop tools and competencies to advance equity and inclusive excellence in their personal and professional lives. Complete all five modules to receive a digital certificate of completion.

Each module will last 30 - 45 minutes, begining with foundational definitions for understanding the content of the module, followed by a quiz or assignment to showcase your understanding of the subject matter. Modules will provide you with important skills for your success in a global world. Whether you are planning for graduate school or planning to go directly into industry developing your critical thinking skills, communications and cultural competencies will advance your success in every endeavor.

LGBTQ+ Identities and Culture

Employing an intersectional lens to remain mindful of differential access to power and cultural/material resources, this module goes beyond terminology to explore how heteronormativity affects not only society as a whole, but the workplace specifically.

Intergroup Dialogue

Our focus on coalition building begins with evidence-based strategies to dialogue across different social identities.

Indigenous Perspectives: Miami Nation

Now we shift focus closer to home and examine how the Miami Nation and its relationship with ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ have evolved through the years, as well as examine the experiences of other indigenous people and how adding this understanding is an important part of building coalitions.

Campus Partners Workshops and Trainings

Office of Equity and Equal Opportunity (OEEO)

OEEO works with the individual offices to schedule the training for most of the training offered. All online training programs receive an automated feed that signs up new employees. Duty to report refresher will be assigned by OEEO to all employees in the fall. The following training and workshops are offered by OEEO:

  • New Employee Online Training
    • Training for new employee include duty to respond, bias prevention, and diversity and inclusion.
  • Duty to Report Training Refresher
    • Open to all employees and offered via Canvas.

    • Open to employees and required for specific employees.

Center for Teaching Excellence

Miami's Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) works to promote diversity and inclusion through the design and implementation of programs, resources, and services that support instructor development in accommodating a diverse group of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs with a variety of backgrounds and abilities. Continuous improvement for instructors in inclusive teaching strategies and a deeper understanding of the pedagogical dimensions of DEI topics contribute to an overall inclusive learning environment in which ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs feel equally valued.


Graduate School Professional Development Series

In an effort to increase, sustain and support diversity within our graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs, OTIE will be providing inclusive excellence professionalization opportunities to graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs this upcoming Fall semester. Graduate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs will participate in 11 weeks of professional development, four of which will focus on diversity, equity and inclusion. The ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs will go through workshops on various topics to support their inclusive excellence approach both inside and outside of the classroom.

Pronoun Training

The pronoun training is a 30-minute training to learn what pronouns are, why they are important, recent changes in pronoun use, and how your program/group can be affirming to people of all gender identities. This workshop can be tailored for individual departments or ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ organizations.

The LGBTQ+ Basics training is a 1-hour long training that can be tailored to your group’s needs. This training covers the very basics of LGBTQ+ identities and allyship. This workshop can be tailored for individual departments or ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ organizations.

Safe Zone Training

Safe Zone is a campus-wide program designed to educate ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs, faculty, staff, and community members on LGBTQ identities and experiences. The goal is to create a community that is inclusive for people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. Safe Zone aims to prepare individuals to foster an affirming environment in which all people are free to thrive personally, academically, and professionally. Safe Zone has been designed as a multipart training, with each part building upon the concepts introduced in the previous section. Safe Zone 101 is a three-hour training that introduces individuals to basic language and concepts, and also starts the conversation on what allyship looks like. Safe Zone 201 is a two-hour training that focuses specifically on trans and nonbinary identities, as well as how to best affirm trans and enby individuals. The CSDI offers two of these trainings each semester. There are also a series of hour-long trainings focused on specific identities and histories within the broader LGBTQIA+ community. The CSDI offers several electives each semester. This workshop can be tailored for individual departments or ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ organizations.

These guidelines aim to raise awareness, guide learning, and support the use of culturally sensitive terms and phrases that center the voices and perspectives of those who are often marginalized or stereotyped. The American Psychological Association offer this and many other online resources.

 

CEO Act!on is the largest CEO-driven business commitment to advance diversity and inclusion in the workplace. A unique coalition of more than 600 CEOs have signed on to this commitment, agreeing to take action to cultivate environments where diverse experiences and perspectives are welcomed and where employees feel comfortable and encouraged to discuss diversity and inclusion.

Organization employees are also urged to commit themselves to the cause by  to support inclusion.

Founded in 1989 by Bryan Stevenson, a widely acclaimed public interest lawyer and bestselling author of Just Mercy, the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) is a private organization that works with marginalized communities to challenge racial and economic injustice, and protect basic human rights for the most vulnerable people in American society.

In addition to such resources as discussion guides and other educational materials, EJI provides research and recommendations to assist advocates and policymakers in the critically important work of criminal justice reform.
