Research Bio
Fazeel Khan has been a faculty member with the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering since 2003.
Following the completion of his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), NY, in 2002, he completed a one year post-doctoral appointment at the Nano-Engineering Laboratory at RPI. His earlier academic preparation includes a MS from RPI in 1998 with a concentration in Manufacturing, and a BA in Physics completed in 1996 at Middlebury College, VT.
Dr. Khan’s current research activities focus on the characterization of the deformation behavior of biocompatible polymers used in total knee and hip replacement prosthetics.
The research seeks to investigate changes in the polyethylene bearing material stemming from cyclical loading. The data is used to enhance the predictive capability of simulation models to enhance the service life of replacement joints. Other research activities involve the fabrication and control of electrically triggered shape memory polymers, and the fabrication and testing of graded polymeric structures for specific vibration damping characteristics when used in aerospace applications.
The latter has been pursued in collaboration with the Air Force Research Lab. Funding for the research has come from NSF, Department of Defense, ASEE and MathWorks.
Dr. Khan’s recent teaching responsibilities at the undergraduate and graduate level have mostly been in the materials science area. With an academic interest in the field of materials and a personal interest in automotive engineering, Dr. Khan has been an academic advisor to the MME Baja Team which campaigns an off-road vehicle, entirely designed and fabricated in-house, against an international field every year.
