Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing

Policy

This policy applies to all 3D printers, CNCs, laser cutters, and other tools and machines owned, leased, or operated by the University, or that are otherwise located on the University’s premises, and to all persons who may use such devices. The University is not responsible for printing or manufacturing errors or damage to printed or manufactured items.

Additive and subtractive manufacturing devices like 3D printers, CNC systems, and laser cutters may be used only for lawful purposes. No one will be permitted to use any such devices on University property to create material that is, or can be used as the following:

  1.  a “deadly weapon,” “firearm,” “explosive device,” “incendiary device,” “dangerous ordinance,” or “explosive” or any part thereof as defined in .  A dangerous weapon is further defined by University policy as any instrument, device, or object capable of inflicting physical harm or death; and designed or specifically adapted for use as a weapon; or possessed, carried, or used as a weapon.
  2. in violation of another’s intellectual property rights (e.g. copyright, patent, trademark, etc.) or personality rights (e.g. name, image, likeness, etc.).
  3. in violation of any applicable contract and license associated with the hardware and software used to operate the technology;
  4. unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the health or safety of others
  5. in violation of any ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ policy or the Code of Student Conduct,
  6. in violation of any state or federal law or regulations
  7. obscene, libelous or otherwise not protected by the First Amendment;

Items must be picked up by the individual who submitted them or their designee, using valid ID. Items not picked up within 30 days become the property of the University.

Access to equipment may be prioritized based on factors such as academic priority, class due dates, reprints, and other issues as they arise.  The University reserves the right to alter queue order based on these factors.

This policy supersedes any conflicting language in any other department’s policy on the use of additive and subtractive manufacturing devices.
