University earns HEED Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine

¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ recognized for inclusive excellence for fifth straight year

For a fifth consecutive year, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ has been recognized by INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine for its diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts.

Miami is among 114 institutions that earned the magazine’s . The institutions will be recognized in the November/December 2024 edition of the magazine.

The HEED Award is given annually to colleges and universities that demonstrate outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion.

"At Miami, inclusive excellence is an integrated goal throughout our campuses," ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ President Gregory Crawford said. "It's not the responsibility of a single person or office; we all take accountability for creating an environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging, and diverse thoughts and perspectives are welcomed. We are honored to see our efforts continuously recognized."

Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity, said in a news release that the HEED Award process includes a comprehensive and rigorous application with questions relating to the recruitment and retention of ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs and employees, as well as best practices for both.

Leadership support for diversity, campus culture and climate, and supplier diversity also are taken into account, as are many other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion.

“The winning institutions consistently demonstrate best practices and set the standards for other colleges and universities,” Pearlstein said.

Cristina Alcalde, Miami’s vice president for Transformational and Inclusive Excellence, said, “This award is a wonderful recognition of ongoing efforts across Miami and encourages us to continue to do the necessary work to build an inclusive Miami that is welcoming and supportive for all through a focus on climate, policies, programs, and initiatives.”

Alcalde added, “This work can be both rewarding and challenging and receiving this award for the fifth year in a row affirms that we are on the right track in our intentional efforts to advance and reflect Miami’s inclusive excellence values.”

The ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ Alumni Association was one of 32 recipients featured in the June edition of INSIGHT Into Diversity representing the magazine’s 2024 Alumni Association Inclusive Excellence Award.

This past year, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ Libraries received the Library Excellence in Access and Diversity (LEAD) Award and the Farmer School of Business Passport Program received  the Inspiring ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ in Business Award.

Last year, the LSAMP program earned an Inspiring ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ in STEM Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity. It was the third consecutive year the program received this recognition.
