Three new graduate degree programs to be offered at CEC

Engineering ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs seeking out advanced degrees will soon have three brand new graduate program options to choose from at the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC). The new programs offer a Master of Engineering degree (M.Eng.) in either Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical and Smart Manufacturing Engineering. Each M.Eng. degree program is a one-year, full-time course of study with no thesis component, designed to offer workforce preparation, advanced skills, and a competitive edge in securing job opportunities to ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs not interested in pursuing thesis research.

Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering

Biomedical and pharmaceutical companies have invested heavily in new facilities within the state of Ohio as the share of the biomedical industry as percentage of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) continues to grow nationally. Ohio life science companies attracted $3.5 billion in funding in 2021, and the bioscience industry in Ohio employs nearly 83,700 people in over 4,000 companies across the state. Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median wage of $100,730 per year for Biomedical Engineers with projected growth from 2022-2032 of 5%, faster than the average for all occupations. CEC’s one-year M.Eng Biomedical Engineering program offers hands-on instruction and real-world experience—in areas such as tissue engineering, drug delivery, biomaterials, biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, biomedical optical imaging and sensing, cardiac electrophysiology, and FDA regulations—in order to prepare ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs for the continued growth of biomedical engineering applications locally and globally. Through the M. Eng. Biomedical Engineering program, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs with undergraduate degrees not only in engineering, but also in kinesiology, biology, microbiology, physics, chemistry, and biochemistry, can develop the qualifications required to be successful in the biomedical engineering industry.

Master of Engineering in Chemical Engineering

Chemical Engineers are among the highest earners of all engineering professionals. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median wage for Chemical Engineers as of 2023 was $112,100, with employment projected to grow 8% from 2022 to 2032. In the new M.Eng. in Chemical Engineering degree program from CEC, ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs can develop in-demand skills in areas such as biochemical and biomolecular engineering, environmental engineering, renewable energy, paper science and engineering, thermodynamics modeling, and finite-element simulation. The program was developed to address the current industry need for chemical engineers with advanced problem-solving skills and hands-on experience, and is designed to help develop skill sets that ensure M.Eng. graduates are more competitive in the job market. 

Master of Engineering in Mechanical and Smart Manufacturing Engineering (MSME)

This unique degree program, which will include access to CEC’s first-of-its-kind Smart Manufacturing Learning Laboratory, offers exceptional workforce preparation and face-to-face, hands-on instruction in both Mechanical Engineering and the emerging field of Smart Manufacturing Engineering. With core courses in mathematical modeling, dynamical systems and control, thermal-fluid systems, mechanics and mechanical behavior of materials, smart manufacturing, and more, the one-year M.Eng MSME will prepare ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs with the qualifications required to be successful in high-growth industries such as aerospace, robotics, the energy sector, and manufacturing. 

Admission and application process

Domestic applications will be accepted for Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering beginning Fall 2024. Domestic applications for Mechanical and Smart Manufacturing Engineering will be accepted starting Spring 2025. International applicants can begin applying as soon as ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵ receives permission from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to offer the programs to international ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs, and this process is already underway. 

Who should apply?

Graduating ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs or recent graduates from science or engineering programs around the world, including both domestic and international candidates, are encouraged to apply for these one-year M.Eng. programs. Working professionals in any science or engineering-related industries who aim to expand their expertise and secure higher paying positions (in their company or outside their current company) may also find particular benefit to the structure of the program coursework, which is open to part-time and non-traditional ¾Ã¾ÃÈÈÊÓƵs. International applicants who seek advanced training and coursework that could be completed in a short period of time (e.g., one year) may find the structure of these programs uniquely beneficial.
